NAVAGRAHA TEMPLE 8 - THIRUNALLAR
SANI, the Saturn is a planet quoted as the taskmaster ruling hard work and discipline. It is also known as the planet of darkness. The effects it produces are delays, frustrations, difficulties and depressions. Saturn also governs age and death. To the common man in India, the very name of Shani (Saturn) brings a deep sense of fear and apprehension. But wisdom consists in learning through all the difficulties in life, and rising above it as a more enlightened human being. This is the basic philosophy that Saturn conveys. No wonder it is regarded as the `Teacher`. Saturn often handles the success to the person after thoroughly checking and seeing that he is totally prepared to handle it well.
The planet Shani or Saturn revolves around the Sun in about 30 years, which means it passes through all the 12 rashis or moonsigns in 30 years. Thus Shani spends on an average about two and half years in each rashi or moonsign. This movement of Shani through the moonsigns carries great importance in hindu astrology and horoscope predictions. The effect of Shani starts when it enters the previous rashi/moonsign to one's own birth rashi and stops when it leaves the rashi/moonsign after one's birth rashi. The total period of 7 and half years (2 and 1/2 years x 3) is called Saadesaati or "Elanata Shani", and is typically a period of great difficulty.
So this temple has lot of devotees during "sani peyarchi" (the time of the transit of Saturn in Rasis) devotees throng in lakhs to have a dip in Nala Tirtham and worship Sani. Small lamps of clay are filled with gingelly oil and lit. Thousands of such lamps are lit in the corridor and from far it looks like a bonfire. The legends declare that Sani is propitiated by offering gingelly oil, icon and cakes made of sesame grains.
